Toan started his TV reporting career at WAOW, the ABC affiliate in Wausau, Wisconsin. He then headed south to Midland, Texas to report for KWES, the NBC affiliate. He eventually ventured back west to Fresno, California, and was the morning reporter for KGPE, before heading back to San Francisco. He is also a member of the Asian American Journalists' Association.
